Hiking with Kids {Baby Nature Play}

Hello everyone! Ashlee from Loving Naturally here, once again, to touch on the topic of nature play. Nature and being outdoors is important to our family; making sure we live in an area that allows us to do this is great.

During summer we like to stop down the beach and get our toes wet after school. During winter we like to take a scenic way home, stopping to listen to the waves crashing into the rocks below, unwinding from a crazy stress filled day. So when we take holidays we love to still be able to be close to nature and for our children to be able to get dirty, climb trees and explore to their heart's content.

This year we decided we would join forces with Squiggles and Bubbles' very own Victoria and her lovely family and head off into the wilderness for the Easter long weekend. Together with our hubbies, five children and two dogs we hiked up a lovely track that took us right up to a waterfall, we literally stood over the waterfall, it was amazing being able to look down onto something so beautiful.

Even though the youngest two had to be carried they still got to experience all the amazing smells, sounds of the native birds echoing in the trees and even reaching up and feeling the textures of the moss growing on the trees and the ferns between their fingers. It was the best kind of sensory play.

Towards the end of our walk, I decided I would show the older children some false gold that was scattered in the watery banks of the stream, even scooping up some of the water so the older kids could enjoy their first taste of waterfall water. They loved it!

Walking to the falls and camping in the bush gave all the children the freedom to explore and detach themselves from an over stimulated world and reconnect to their inner child; creating fairy homes out of bark and twigs they had found,creating their own games and just digging in the dirt, while learning amazing life lessons about bush cooking and what kind of wood works best to have a fire keep you warm.

I implore everyone one: even if it is just going on a nature walk or camping in your backyard get outdoors, explore, listen to the things around you and enjoy the beautiful world around us.
